Ring Video Doorbell Pro 2 Review: Is It Still the Best Smart Doorbell in 2026?

I have been testing smart doorbells for years, and the Ring Video Doorbell Pro 2 has been on my front door for the last six weeks. It is the most expensive model in Ring’s wired lineup, and it promises 1536p HD video, 3D motion detection, and bird’s eye view. But with competition from Google Nest, Arlo, and Eufy, I wanted to see if Ring still holds the crown in 2026.

Spoiler: It is excellent, but it is not for everyone. Here is my full review.

First Impressions and Installation

The Ring Pro 2 is sleek. It is a slim, rectangular unit that sits flush against the door frame. It comes in Satin Nickel, Venetian Bronze, and Pearl White. I chose Satin Nickel, and it blends in nicely with my existing door hardware. It is a bit larger than the original Ring Pro, but it still looks modern and unobtrusive.

Installation is straightforward if you have an existing doorbell with a wired connection. Ring includes a mounting bracket, screwdriver, and a drill bit if you need to make new holes. The hardest part was connecting the wires to the small screws on the back, but it took about 20 minutes total. You will need a voltage meter to ensure your transformer provides 16-24 VAC, which most homes do. If yours does not, you will need to upgrade the transformer (about $20 on Amazon).

Once the doorbell is mounted, you download the Ring app, scan the QR code on the back, and connect it to your Wi-Fi. The whole process took less than five minutes. It supports 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz networks, which is important for minimizing interference.

Video Quality: Better Than 1080p, Not Quite 4K

Ring calls the Pro 2’s resolution “1536p HD.” That is 1536 x 1536 pixels, which is a square aspect ratio. This is actually a smart design choice because it shows you more of the ground and the package at your feet without having to tilt the camera down. The image is sharp and clear during the day. I could read the text on a delivery label from about five feet away.

Night vision is also impressive. It uses infrared LEDs that provide a clear black-and-white image up to 30 feet. The color night vision mode works if you have a Ring Smart Lighting device nearby, but I did not, so I relied on the standard IR. It is good enough to see faces and movements, but it is not as vibrant as the Arlo Pro 5S’s color night vision.

The field of view is 150 degrees horizontal and 150 degrees vertical. This is wider than the Google Nest Doorbell (130 degrees) and gives you a full view of your porch. I can see the entire walkway, the door, and the driveway on the left side.

3D Motion Detection and Bird’s Eye View

The headline feature of the Pro 2 is the 3D motion detection. Instead of a standard motion sensor, this doorbell uses radar to map the area in front of your door in three dimensions. It can tell if someone is walking toward the door, walking away, or just walking past on the sidewalk.

In practice, this works very well. I set up activity zones in the app to ignore the street and only alert me when someone steps onto my walkway. I got very few false alerts from cars or squirrels. The radar also tracks the person’s path, which shows up in the app as a top-down view called Bird’s Eye View. It is a little gimmicky, but it is helpful if you want to see where someone came from.

Audio Quality and Two-Way Talk

Two-way audio is clear on both ends. I tested it by having my wife stand outside while I spoke through the app. She said my voice sounded natural and not robotic. The microphone on the doorbell picked up her voice clearly, even when a car drove by. There is also a noise cancellation feature that reduces wind noise. It is not perfect—I still heard some wind during a storm—but it is better than the original Ring Pro.

Ring Protect Subscription: The Catch

Like all Ring cameras, the Pro 2 requires a subscription to record video. Without Ring Protect, you only get live view and motion alerts. You cannot rewind or download clips. The basic plan is Ring Protect Basic, which costs $3.99 per month or $39.99 per year per device. This gives you 60 days of event history, snapshot capture, and person alerts.

If you have multiple Ring cameras, the Ring Protect Plus plan is $10 per month or $100 per year and covers unlimited devices at one location. This includes 24/7 professional monitoring for Ring Alarm, which is a good deal if you also have their security system.

I personally find the subscription necessary. Without it, the doorbell is just a glorified peephole. But it is an ongoing cost that you need to factor into your budget.

Pros and Cons

Pros

  • Excellent video quality: 1536p is noticeably better than standard 1080p.
  • 3D motion detection: Fewer false alerts than any other doorbell I have tested.
  • Wide field of view: You see the whole porch, including the ground.
  • Easy installation: Wired setup is simple if you have existing wiring.
  • Alexa integration: Works flawlessly with Echo Show devices.

Cons

  • Subscription required: No cloud storage without paying monthly.
  • No local storage: Unlike Eufy, you cannot save footage to a microSD card.
  • Battery version not available: This model is wired only, so you need existing doorbell wires.
  • No HomeKit support: If you are an Apple user, look at the Logitech Circle View Doorbell.

Who Should Buy the Ring Pro 2?

This doorbell is perfect for homeowners who already have a doorbell wire and want the best motion detection on the market. The 3D radar is genuinely useful for cutting down on false alerts. If you are also a Ring Alarm user, the integration is seamless—you can set the doorbell to trigger the siren if someone lingers too long.

If you are on a budget or do not want a monthly subscription, I would recommend the Eufy S330 instead. It records locally to a HomeBase unit and has 2K resolution. But if you want the most polished app, the best Alexa integration, and the most reliable motion detection, the Ring Pro 2 is still the one to beat.
